This is a translation of an article from a Greek ubuntu related blog.
The original Greek article is at: http://kigka.blogspot.com/2010/11/compiz.html
Stars, fire, snow, more beautiful cube embossed desktop, snap windows and a bunch of others, to write them, it will not tell you anything until you see them live!
It's a new version of Compiz, which is still experimental and therefore
not yet available in the repositories (PPA) of Ubuntu.
However they work flawlessly and there is nothing that prevents us from
having them now!:
Follow step-by-step instructions below carefully.
Do not deviate and not miss anything if you want to install correctly:
Open a terminal (Menu> Utilities> Terminal) and then copy-paste,
one by one the following commands, pressing Enter after each:
sudo apt-get install compiz-fusion-bcop compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-dev build-essential libtool libglu1-mesa-dev libxss-dev libcairo2-dev git-core
cd && git clone git://anongit.compiz.org/users/soreau/scripts compizexperimental
cd compizexperimental/
chmod +x compiz-addons
./compiz-addons
Now we get to the point where you are being asked for each one of the effects
if you want to install.
You would press i to install them all
(Why not also do it in the first place?)
The process will repeat it self a dozen times.
Just finish and it then you click open the Terminal
and restart Compiz from there, with the command:
compiz --replace
Don't forget that these are still experimental.
So, quite unlikely in some cases not working properly.
On the afternoon that we had tried it on 4 different machines,
with Ubuntu 10.10, 10.04 and Mint 10. But all 32b.
All worked perfectly and no one experienced any crashes
counting that the test we put it to was to run multiple effects simultaneously.
After you go: Menu> System> Preferences> Compiz,
open, try the new effects, create shortcuts that you want for each.
Wants some search because frankly they are alot.
IF THERE IS ANY PROBLEM:
But if something does not go well and you want to uninstall
enter into a terminal the following two commands:
cd ~/compizexperimental
./compiz-addons uninstall all
Restart compiz by typing in a terminal again:
compiz --replace
and it will revert to your old settings and effects.
---- The Greek article ends Here. ----
ALSO i have tested it on my Athlon 64 3500+ processor with ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS 64bit
and i had no problems at all. Everything worked just FINE! ;-) Enjoy ;-)
